North Yorkshire Virtual School: Support for Unaccompanied Asylum‑Seeking Children (UASC)

North Yorkshire Virtual School supports the educational achievement and emotional wellbeing of all children in care, including unaccompanied asylum‑seeking children (UASC).

Once accommodated under Section 20 of the Children Act 1989, UASC are treated first and foremost as children and have the same rights and entitlements as all looked‑after children, regardless of immigration status.

The Virtual School UASC portfolio lead works closely with YP‑RAST social workers, keyworkers, carers, education providers and partner agencies to ensure a safe, stable and supportive start to education in the UK.

Our support includes:

  • Education access and planning
Supporting timely access to appropriate education or interim provision, where possible. An initial Personal Education Plan (PEP) forms the basis of a personalised education offer, developed with schools, colleges and approved providers.
  • Language support (EAL / ESOL)
Facilitating early access to English language learning, including online platforms on arrival, and encouraging participation in local and community activities to support language development and integration.
  • Emotional wellbeing and trauma‑informed practice
Promoting relational, trauma‑informed approaches that recognise the impact of trauma, loss and transition, alongside access to appropriate wellbeing support where needed.
  • Partnership working and aspiration
Working through established multi‑agency networks to share best practice, support consistency, and help young people understand and access pathways within the English education system.

The Virtual School applies a trauma‑informed, strengths‑based approach, aligning with national guidance and Ofsted expectations on safeguarding, inclusion, stability and positive outcomes for vulnerable children and young people.
