Early Career Teachers (ECTs)

Appropriate Body Role

Following the outcome of the DfE’s consultation and their decision on the future of Appropriate Body (AB) status for local authorities (LAs), North Yorkshire Council (NYC) has taken the opportunity to review its role as an Appropriate Body and decided to implement the transition to a fully Teaching School Hub-led model from September 2023. Therefore, from September 2023, North Yorkshire Local Authority is no longer acting as an Appropriate Body.

The Local Authority has worked with its Teaching School Hub partners to make arrangements for 2nd year Early Career Teachers (ECTs) to transition to one of the three teaching school hubs who will fulfil the role of the Appropriate Body.

ECTs starting their second year in September 2023 have been consulted, and received confirmation of, their new Appropriate Body in readiness for September 2023. ECTs who have not completed induction by the end of the 2023/2024 academic year is being transferred for the remainder of their induction to a new AB.

Any ECT who is uncertain about their Appropriate Body arrangements from September 2023 should contact Jill Stubbs, NY ECT Lead, via email jill.stubbs@northyorks.gov.uk in the first instance.

In-line with the Induction for Early Careers Teachers Statutory Guidance, all records for both Year 1 and 2 teachers will be kept on file for up to six years as part of GDPR arrangements:

2.72 It is recommended that assessment reports are retained by both the institution and the appropriate body for a minimum of six years. If there are reasons for the institution and the appropriate body to retain records for longer than six years, they may do so if they comply with the Data Protection Act. ECTs are advised to retain the original copies of their own assessment reports.

School wishing to register a Year 1 ECT should contact one of the three teaching school hubs that serve the North Yorkshire Local Authority area.

It has been a privilege to support Early Career teachers over the period that the LA fulfilled the Appropriate Body role. Our thanks are extended to the dedicated team of induction tutors and mentors that have supported ECTs to achieve success in their early careers.

We also thank the Headteachers, and school leaders, who have given their time to mentor many ECTs in their care.
