Specialist Careers Service

As part of our Preparing for Adulthood support offer NYC has an expert team providing Specialist Careers information, advice and guidance for children and young people. This team predominantly supports those with SEND, high needs and those requiring additional support.  This support can be accessed by a range of settings including mainstream schools, special schools and colleges.

We work together with education providers, young people and their families to raise aspirations, prepare students for adult life and ensure they remain in Education, Employment or Training that is suitable for them to progress. By providing expert careers guidance children and young people are supported to make informed decisions about their future and next steps.  This supports successful transition to the right provision allowing students to develop skills in a planned way, reach their full potential and achieve best outcomes.

We support children and young people to

  • Develop a strong sense of personal responsibility and the resilience and confidence to overcome barriers to achieve their goals
  • Broaden their horizons, raise aspirations and appreciate their potential to progress
  • Understand the benefits attached to each of the key post 16, post 18 and 19 progression routes
  • Gain access to wider networks, which increase their understanding of career routes and the knowledge and skills they need to succeed

Develop skills and knowledge that assist young people moving into employment.

School Responsibilities

Section 42A of the Education Act 1997 requires governing bodies to ensure that all registered pupils at the school are provided with independent careers guidance from year 8 (12-13 year olds) to year 13 (17-18 year olds).
