Governor Training

Good quality and relevant training is essential if governing bodies are to discharge their responsibilities effectively and efficiently. NYCC offers a training programme for governors of all levels and experience.  In the coming school year this might look a little different from our usual offer, certainly in respect of how we deliver, but we hope you will find something of interest to you.

Our training programme includes:

  • Termly Governor update events – for all governors, covering local and national changes and developments
  • Introduction to Governance - for new governors or those wanting to update their skills
  • Being an Effective Chair - for new and aspiring Chairs Vice-chairs, chairs of committees or those wanting to update their skills
  • Complaints training for all governors and head teachers
  • Performance Management and appraisal training for governors responsible for the performance management of head teachers and other staff.
  • Finance training - for all governors
  • Monitoring your school - for all governors, looking how to plan and carry out school visits effectively
  • Safeguarding training – for all governors

For more information on training and how to book on courses ask your clerk or head teacher. All schools have different methods for booking on NYCC courses which is usually done by the school administrator.

It is fully appreciated that sometimes it is difficult for governors to negotiate time off work to attend training courses. What you might not know is that if you are a school governor you are entitled to time off to carry out your role. Section 50 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 requires employers to permit employees who hold certain public positions (including school governors) reasonable time off to perform the duties associated with them although there is no obligation for payment to be made.

Bespoke training for individual schools or clusters can be arranged.  Please submit a request through SLA on-line (the school administrator will need to do this for you) giving brief details of the session that you would like and a point of contact for further discussion about this.
