Learning Beyond the Classroom

"When planned and implemented well, learning outside the classroom contributed significantly to raising standards and improving pupils' personal, social and emotional development. Learning outside the classroom was most successful when it was an integral element of long-term curriculum planning and closely linked to classroom activities." Ofsted, Learning Beyond The Classroom, How far should you go? 2008

There is no doubt that young people benefit from taking part in off-site visits and activities. These experiences often provide exciting and life-enhancing opportunities which are simply not available in the classroom or youth centre. They help to develop self-esteem, thought for others, listening to others and sharing in what can sometimes be a life changing experience.

Whilst there can be no doubt as to the benefits gained, we must also have regard to the risks involved. It is essential that off-site activities are carried out with the highest regard for the health and safety of both children and adults involved in them.

This section of the website provides headteachers, managers, educational visits co-ordinators and visit leaders with information and guidance on the establishment of policies and procedures to safely manage all risks associated with learning beyond the classroom, including training course details, news and planning documentation in order to assist them in providing young people with a range of varied, rewarding and safe off-site visits and activities.
