Who We Are

The English as an additional language (EAL) and Gypsy Roma and Traveller (GRT) Service, is a well-established, flexible and experienced team of highly qualified specialist consultantsand specialist ATAs, who support educational settings within North Yorkshire and beyond.

The service is committed to working with schools and settings to continue to improve the quality of teaching, learning and provision for EAL children. Training courses, in school / setting support, and additional advisory services are based upon research and best practice, with a clear focus on the needs of schools, pupils, teachers and governors.. The specialist consultantsare engaged in professional learning, and are at the cutting edge of EAL teaching and learning developments – through engagement with national Institutions, research projects and ongoing pedagogical developments.

The EAL and GRT Service’s core pedagogy is to promote and sustain continuous improvement in the quality of education for EAL and GRT children and young people. All of the consultants  are qualified teachers, many with specific post graduate qualifications and extensive teaching experience. The team are supported by highly skilled advanced teaching assistants some of whom also have bilingual skills.  Services:

The service is unique in that they offer two strands of support:

1: Training and coaching for staff and other stakeholders

2: Bespoke support For EAL and GRT pupils to meet their needs

Specialist Consultants- key areas of expertise that they can support you with are:

  • Initial induction and assessment for new arrivals and their families
  • EAL policy development
  • EAL manager support
  • DfE assessment guidance
  • Leadership development and support
  • Advice, training and support for the effective development of quality first level teaching through provision development- strategies to support differentiation
  • Devising bespoke packages to support teaching & learning
  • Advice, training and support to promote inclusion and independence through access to a mainstream curriculum
  • Support for practitioners across a range of age phases, including wider workforce professional and all educational settings
  • CPD support and training for NQTs, School alliances, SCITT providers and HE ITT institutions
  • Targeted programmes that respond to local and national priorities
    Specialist Advanced Teaching Assistants:
  • Deliver the packages developed by the special advisory teachers to enhance and promote learning for individuals and small groups
  • Promotion of initial spoken language – communication and language skills
  • EAL friendly phonics
  • Developing reading comprehension
  • Developing writing skills - promoting understanding of sentence structure and developing confidence in their use and application
  • Pre teaching of subject/ topic vocabulary
  • EAL pupils preparing for test/examination (phonics test, KS2 SATs, GCSE’s: developing academic language and understanding of cultural references
  • Translation services (Arabic/Polish)
